What can I do to help?
The Veterinary Care Charitable Fund® is a program created by the American Veterinary Medical Foundation (AVMF) to provide veterinarians with a simple and effective way to offer charitable veterinary services to clients facing personal hardships as well as a means to support animals who are injured or rescued from abuse and neglect. Enrolled veterinary hospitals now have a way to offer low or no-cost services to clients who may otherwise be forced to surrender or euthanize their beloved pets.

How long is the appointment?
The average appointment time is 30 minutes, however, this will change depending on what is going on with your pet. If your pets need any diagnostic testing, it may take a lot longer. We will give you an expected time once we have a treatment plan.
I have errands to run, can you promise appointments will be done on time?
We would love to accommodate as much as possible, however unfortunately we can not promise all necessary exams/diagnostics would be done for your other engagement. If you have limited time available, we offer drop-off exams. This will give us time to do a full complete examination of your pet and recommend treatment over the phone while you are away. We do not want to do a “rush” examination and miss something that could be very important.
Do you offer pet urgent care?

Yes! We offer pet urgent care. If this is an emergency, or if your pet needs urgent care, please call us at 772-925-1625 for a faster response.

Can you approve my pet for travel?

Mermaid Vet Hospital is USDA accredited for the international certificate. If you are traveling with your pet, please visit the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service to learn about pet travel requirements by country.

Do you approve other online pharmacies such as Chewy, 1-800-Pet-Meds, etc?

We have increasing concerns about the ethical behavior and authenticity of products supplied by some online pharmacies. Midwest is the ONLY trusted online pharmacy recommended by our veterinarians, and we consider it an extension of our hospital. We are committed to providing the best and safest medications for your pet, and for this reason, we do not recommend purchasing medications from any online pharmacy except Midwest through our online portal.

Because we want your decisions to be well informed, we have summarized the major concerns below:

  • After discussions with multiple veterinary pharmaceutical companies that manufacture several of these products, we have discovered that many of these companies limit the distribution of their products through licensed veterinarians, and so products obtained from many internet retailers are likely acquired illegally through non-approved channels.
  • The manufacturer cannot guarantee safe handling, appropriate storage, and that the product has not been tampered with when they are not obtained through a licensed veterinarian. For this reason, the companies will not honor their warranties/guarantees if the products are not obtained through a licensed veterinarian. This means that reactions to the medications or failure of the medications (ie: preventatives) are not covered by the manufacturer’s warranty.
  • Several clients have reported that they have received medications outside of their original packaging which leads us to question the authenticity of these medications.
  • Pharmaceuticals manufactured for and labeled for use in other countries (namely Australia and Mexico) have been illegally diverted and sold through these discount houses in the United States.
We have also noticed several mistakes made on the part of multiple online pharmacies.

We understand that some of our clients have relationships with other online pharmacies and that altering these relationships may present an inconvenience. Because of our commitment to preserving the integrity of these products and the important warranties available through the manufacturers, we have taken steps to make this adjustment easier. To help offset the financial implications, we have also adjusted our prices on our online pharmacy on many of these preventative products to match those of some online pharmacies. We will also price match if you provide us with the screenshot or printout of your shopping cart that includes the total from other online pharmacies. We hope that this will help alleviate any concerns regarding cost.

If you would still like to obtain your refill through one of these discount pharmacies, please let one of our team members know and we can provide you with a written script ($6 fee applies) that you can then send to the online pharmacy. The script will be available at the hospital to pick up, or we can email it to you at the email address you provide to us. Please allow up to 72 hours for us to process your request.
